File Analytics

File system metadata collection, and what it does not collect.

Visual One File Analytics scans file systems to collect file system metadata: file counts, sizes, ownership, and access attributes. It exists to give visibility into storage utilization and file distribution across supported platforms, answering questions about what is actually consuming capacity rather than only how much is consumed.

Only metadata is collected: File contents are never read or collected, and individual file names and ownership data are never uploaded to Visual One.

Choosing a collector

The Linux-based collector is recommended, for performance efficiency and scalability. A Windows-based collector is also available where a Linux host is not practical.

Further configuration

Supported collector types, operating system requirements, and NFS and CIFS storage access configuration are covered in the Visual One Intelligence File Analytics Deployment Guide, which is a separate document. Contact your Visual One account representative or Visual One Support for a copy.
